Electricity Tariff Types Explained

Understand the different electricity tariff structures in Australia and find the one that best matches your usage.

Types of Electricity Tariffs

Single Rate (Flat Rate)

One rate per kWh regardless of when you use electricity. Best for consistent usage throughout the day. Typical rate: 25-35c/kWh.

Time-of-Use (TOU)

Different rates at different times:

  • Peak (3pm-9pm weekdays): 35-55c/kWh
  • Shoulder (7am-3pm, 9pm-10pm): 20-30c/kWh
  • Off-peak (10pm-7am, weekends): 15-22c/kWh

Best for households that can shift energy-intensive activities to off-peak times.

Demand Tariff

Charges based on maximum demand (kW) during peak periods, plus usage charges. Best for solar and battery owners.

Controlled Load

Separate tariff for specific appliances (hot water, pool pumps) running at off-peak times. Rate: 15-20c/kWh.

How to Choose

  1. Review your usage patterns
  2. Check your meter type (smart meters enable TOU)
  3. Consider your flexibility to shift usage
  4. Calculate costs under both options
  5. Factor in solar generation
